Chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani has remained under house arrest since June 7 while restrictions have been imposed on Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) chief Shabir Ahmad Shah since Sunday.
However, official sources said restrictions were imposed to prevent any untoward incident as there were apprehensions of breach of peace.
A spokesman of the Hurriyat Aiyaz Akbar said a large number of paramilitary forces and state police have remained deployed outside the Hyderpora residence of Geelani since June 7. He added that for the past few weeks, Geelani could not offer Friday prayers in the mosque because of the restriction from every Thursday.
Geelani had called for a general strike today to remember more than 120 people, who were killed in an alleged police firing during 2010 separatist agitation.
Shah said he has also been put under house arrest since yesterday afternoon. "I was not allowed to move out of my house," he said adding that security forces remained deployed outside his residence.
