Exposed by the fake certificate of Tarn Taran SSP Raj Jit Singh's 'killing by terrorists', issued to his daughter for admission to MBBS under a quota, Hoshiarpur deputy commissioner (DC) Varun Roojam now seems haunted by the ghost of the tale.

Two days after HT pointed out the certificate signed by Roojam for the Hoshiarpur-native SSP's daughter, the DC has ordered a probe into all such certificates given to the district's people for the 'terrorism-affected' quota in the past two years. Issued on June 25, 2013, the certificate was produced on August 7 by the SSP's daughter in the counselling for MBBS seats at Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Faridkot, with an eye on the 2% reservation for "wards of terrorism/riot-affected persons".

After the HT expose on August 10, the fake certificate was "withdrawn" by the DC, and an official working in the relief and rehabilitation branch was suspended. Confirming that he has now ordered an investigation of files of the past two years, Roojam told HT, "The decision has been taken to rule out any such case [as that of the SSP]. If we find any such case, we will take appropriate action."
