Girls eclipse boys, but honours even at the top

A boy and a girl from Sangrur district were declared joint toppers in the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Class-10 examinations, the result of which was declared on Monday.

Dipti of Model Basic High School, Sunam, and Harshveer Goyal of Shiksha Niketan, Moonak, both secured 96.46% marks (627 out of 650). The pass percentage of girls was 76.58%, far better than that of the boys (63.84%).

Harneet Kaur of Nankana Sahib Public School, Khasi Kalan (Ludhiana) got the second position with 96.31% marks. The third position has been shared by four students with 96.15% marks: Kiranpal Kaur of Guru Nanak Public Senior Secondary School, Chananke (Amritsar); Sukhpreet Kaur of Sada Ram Bansal Memorial Senior Secondary School, Kotkapura (Faridkot); Sarika of BCM Senior Secondary School, HM-150, Jamalpur (Ludhiana); and Deepak Kumar of SGD Grammar Senior Secondary School, Dhandari Kalan (Ludhiana).

More than 4.19 lakh students appeared in the March exams, of which around 2.9 lakh were declared pass. The overall pass percentage (69.32%) dropped by 4% from last year's 73.49%, but it was better compared to 2011 (64.32%).
Of the 430 students on the merit list, the maximum (126) are from Ludhiana district. At the other end, Mansa and Taran Taran districts had only one student each on the list.

Addressing mediapersons here on Monday, board chairperson Tejinder Kaur Dhaliwal lauded teachers for their efforts to obtain a good result.

She said the detailed result was available on the board's website, www.pseb.ac.in, and www.indiaresults.com using the school code or the roll number. Students can apply for re-evaulation within 10 days of the date of declaration of the result, she said.
