The Punjab government has decided to impart free education to all eligible girl children up to Class 12th.
Minister for social security, women and child development Madan Mohan Mittal said that the government had increased the ambit of the Bebe Nanki Scheme.
Under the 'Bebe Nanki Ladli Beti Kalyan Scheme', families of all girls born after January 1, 2011, will now be eligible for financial assistance up to Class 12.
Mittal added that scheme was launched to tackle the menace of female foeticide. Orphan girls living in destitute homes would also be eligible for the financial assistance under the scheme.
The minister added that there was no bar on the number of girl children in a family that can avail the scheme. The benefit would also be given to the families, with annual income less than Rs 30,000. The proof of such income will be the blue card issued by the department of food and civil supplies. Families need to be permanent residents of the state.
