A 35-year-old intruder was apprehended and thrashed by the inmates of Girls Hostel 3 on the Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) campus here on Wednesday night.

Santosh Kumar, a resident of Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh, was handed over to the police and was booked under Section 456 (illegal trespassing during night hours) of the IPC.

Dean Students Welfare Amarjit Singh Sidhu, while giving details here on Thursday, said the accused scaled a four-metre wall of a house adjoining the hostel and jumped over another wall and entered the hostel.

However, a group of girls who were taking a walk in the hostel premises noticed the intruder, nabbed him and started beating him up.

According to the DSW, the accused was drunk. The security outside the hostel was alerted and they rescued the intruder from the girls. The police were summoned around midnight and the intruder handed over to them.

The DSW said the intruder was engaged in construction work on the campus. Earlier, he used to work in the canteen of a boys’ hostel.

This is not the first time that such an incident has occurred. The only difference was that the girls confronted the intruder instead of getting scared.

In September last year, similar incidents had been reported twice from the girls’ hostels. These had led to protests from students as the university authorities had tried to brush aside the incidents. Then, the authorities had increased the height of the boundary walls of the girls’ hostels and installed CCTV cameras outside the hostels.

This time, there were no protests as the girls were all praise for the university authorities and the security staff.

However, the university has suspended teaching work on the campus on March 9 and 10. Sources said the authorities apprehended that the students might hold protests when the university reopened on March 9 after the Holi break.

Meanwhile, the GNDU Teachers Association has condemned the incident saying it had once again exposed the loopholes in the security set-up.
