It was a robbery where the victims were literally left gawking at the stars while their house was being ransacked. A self-styled godman from Saharanpur and his sister robbed a resident of Kajheri, Sector 52, of Rs 2.5 lakh, jewellery and cell phone on the pretext of getting rid of an evil spirit in their house on August 26.
Here’s how the crime unfolded
Kajheri resident Kuldeep Singh, working as a head clerk with the Punjab and Haryana high court, had not been keeping well for some time. One fine day, his wife Darshna Devi, came in contact with Kurien Khatun, the godman’s sister, who sensed a victim and then brought her brother the godman, Noor Mohammed, to meet the victim.
After building trust, the brother-sister duo told the couple that to exorcise the evil in their house, they would need to perform a ritual and hand him garlands of Rs 25,000 each.
Apparently hypnotised, the couple did his bidding. The godman then started mumbling some prayers and asked the couple to go on the roof of their house to ‘see the ghosts leaving their house’.
The sister of godman also went with them to avoid suspicion.
However, Khatun slipped away after some time. After an hour, the couple came down to realise that the godman and the sister had vanished taking away the rupee garlands, a mobile and some jewellery.
The police have managed to arrest Khatun, hailing from Nainital. She has been remanded in two-day police custody. The godman is still at large.
A case was registered at the Sector-36 police station.
