The Punjab government has issued a notification to grant monthly pension of `2,000 per month to the people who lost their vision in the Gurdaspur eye camp tragedy. Stating this on Tuesday, a government spokesperson said 35 cases had been identified who had completely lost their vision and would be given pension of `2,000. He added that the government, in order to implement the order, had also given one-time relaxation in the rules of granting special pensions in the social security department.

In November last year, a Mathura-based NGO had organised an eye camp in Gurdaspur without taking the health department and the district administration into confidence. Cataract surgeries were performed under unhygienic conditions, leading to damage to patients’ vision, he added.
