A 21-year-old newly-married woman immolated herself at Mithri village in Odhan block of Haryana's Sirsa district on Wednesday.

As per the suicide note, Veerpal Kaur took the extreme step due to harassment by her alleged ex-lover, Rajinder, a resident of Mithri village. The police have booked him on the charge of abetment of suicide.

Rajinder, a labourer, reportedly kept wooing the woman even after she got married about four months ago. A fortnight ago, he called up at her in-laws' house in Rajasthan and claimed that he had been Veerpal's lover.

The woman, who had been staying at her maternal house in Mithri village for the past 20 days, was informed about the call by her father-in-law on Monday. Unable to bear the humiliation, she set herself afire when all her family members, except her grandmother, were not at home on Wednesday.

Talking to Hindustan Times, the investigating officer, inspector Bharatender Dhillon, said, "A case has been registered against the accused. We are making efforts to arrest him."
