A 17-year-old girl of Saketri village allegedly committed suicide after consuming some poisonous substance at her residence on Sunday.
The incident came to t he light in the morning when she was found unconscious in her room by her father Paramjit Singh, who works in a flour mill. The victim was rushed to Gover nment Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, Chandigarh, where she was declared brought dead by doctors.
The body was then shifted to mortuary of General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, and will be handed over to the family after post-mortem examination. The police have not ruled out sexual exploitation of the girl, who recently cleared her Class 12.
In his statement, Paramjit alleged that his daughter was being pressurised by a local property dealer, Vejinder (45), to marry him.
The father told the police that on Saturday evening the girl had gone to meet Vejinder and had taken his phone along with her. Paramjit got up around 2.30am and found that the girl was not present in the house.
Getting suspicious, he called up the girl and she came back soon. As per the father, the girl told them that Vejinder was pressuring her to marry him otherwise she would have to face consequences.
“We have booked Vejinder under section 305 (abetting suicide of a child) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. We are investigating the case from all angles,” said inspector Ajay Disodia, station house officer of Mansa Devi police station.
