Since the course later of fers a plethora of avenues — even our politics is dominated by lawyers — it is any day a safe bet, provided you have patience, perseverance and basic logical skills. Good communication skills and a faculty for critical analysis and articulation are prerequisites. Such is the level of hard work required that even when there are nearly 10 lakh lawyers in India, experts say only 20% can be considered fit to practice law in actual courts.
Initially, if you want to set up your own practice, it does not pay; but subsequently a junior lawyer cangeta stipend of Rs 5,000-10,000 depending on the advocate one is associated with. A law graduate working with a legal process outsourcing firm may receive an attractive salary of Rs 20,000-50,000.
After completing Class 12, a person is eligible for a five-year integrated law course offered by Panjab University and other institutes and private colleges. Students who have already completed graduation can opt for the three-year course.
But to get enrolled in a good institute, you will have to sit for a test that will check your language skills, general knowledge and current affairs, logical reasoning and mental ability, along with some legal aptitude. Once you clear the written examination, you will face counselling before the final list will be prepared by the institute.
