Union food processing minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Thursday announced that the Centre would concentrate on creating primary collection centres closer to the food production areas to bring in efficiency in food processing and to reduce wastage.
Addressing the eighth global convention for food business and industry in Mumbai, she said her ministry wanted to reduce wastages and losses in the supply chain and would follow a target approach to achieve this, as 18% of the total produce was going waste in the country.
"My ultimate aim is that the processed products should not be limited to elite sections only but should also be within the reach of the common man," she added.
She said efforts were on to reduce interest rates for small and medium food processing industries and that Rs 2,000 crore had been put aside in the budget for the purpose.
Union food processing secretary Siraj Hussain and FICCI representatives also enlightened the entrepreneurs about the initiatives of the union government for the promotion of food processing industry.
