Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP from Bathinda, has sought the Australian government's support to safeguard interests of Indians, especially the Punjabi diaspora. She also sought reciprocal visits of experts from the two countries with focus on Punjab and its diaspora.

Harsimrat, who was part of the Indian parliamentary delegation that visited Australia from May 29 to June 7, held discussions on issues ranging from energy, food security and water, uranium supplies, climate change and mutual cooperation in the fields of agriculture, food and water management.

Seeking expertise and technical assistance for recharging the water table which is depleting at an alarming rate in the state, Harsimrat said Punjab, the leading agricultural zone and the country's food basket, was striving hard to conserve its natural resources in the form of water and land.

She also met Victoria governor Alex Chernov and called for collaboration in the field of education at school and college levels, besides emphasis on university education.
