The Punjab and Haryana high court has appointed an advocate as court commissioner to visit the historical site at Gharonda in Karnal so as to submit a report about the illegal encroachments at the site where the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) wanted to do excavation.
The court headed by justice Mahesh Grover also directed the Karnal deputy commissioner to ensure the security of the court commissioner and the ASI team visiting the site.
The directions came during the hearing of an ongoing contempt of court case against the Haryana government authorities for failing to check illegal encroachments at historical monuments/sites even after giving undertaking before the court.
The court also directed the ASI authorities to clarify the doubts of the Kaithal deputy commissioner about the historical sites under his jurisdiction.
Appearing for the ASI, senior counsel (special engagement), Sukhdeep Singh Sandhu had informed the court that the local administration in Karnal, Kaithal as well as Gurgaon were doing nothing to preserve the ancient monuments and to free them from illegal encroachments.
The case would now come up for hearing on October 1.
