The Punjab and Haryana high court on Monday confirmed the anticipatory bail to suspended inspector general of Punjab Police Gautam Cheema in two cases registered against him and his accomplices in two Mohali police stations for outraging the modesty of a woman and kidnapping a proclaimed offender from the police station.
Justice Jitendra Chauhan ordered that the interim bail granted by the court to Cheema on October 13 was made absolute and that Cheema shall not leave the country without prior permission of the court. The order came after the state government counsel informed the court that as per the earlier court orders, Cheema had joined the investigation and nothing was to be recovered from him.
In one of the cases, it was on September 2 that Mohali police had registered a case against Cheema; Ajay Chaudhary, suspended CEO of Ambala Cantonment Board and Rashmi Negi on the complaint of wife of alleged conman Davinder Singh Gill, Kricpy Khaira. She alleged that Cheema, who was under the influence of liquor, molested her on March 20.
In another case, Mohali police had registered a case against Cheema and his accomplice Ajay Chowdhary on August 30 mainly on the ground that Cheema went to the police station accompanied by Chaudhary, kidnapped a declared proclaimed offender Sumedh Gulati in a private vehicle and took him to Max Hospital Mohali. Cheema was accompanied by Chaudhary and two unknown persons.
Earlier Cheema was on the run. But, after the high court on October 13 and 16, in two separate orders, stayed his arrest, he had joined the investigation before the Mohali police in both the cases.
