The Punjab and Haryana high court has granted four months’ time to the Punjab government to take a decision on the demands raised by a petitioner for making a comprehensive drug de-addiction and rehabilitation policy.

The directions came from the division bench comprising acting chief justice Ashutosh Mohunta and justice HS Sidhu on Tuesday while disposing of a public interest litigation.

The petitioner had sent numerous demand notices to the state government demanding that homoeopathic and ayurvedic systems of medicine should also be involved in drug de-addiction as these are quite cheaper compared to the allopathic system.

The petitioner had also demanded that the state government policy must involve measures for the rehabilitation of drug addicts, de-addiction treatment at private de-addiction and rehabilitation centres should be given free of cost to drug addicts, and the government should reimburse such expenses up to certain limits on the same pattern on which such cashless treatment is being given to cancer patients. It has also been suggested that the government should include chapters on harmful effects of drugs in the curriculum of middle and senior secondary classes in schools for creating awareness among students.
