The Punjab and Haryana high court has issued a notice to Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on a petition filed by Giani Balwant Singh Nandgarh, sacked jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, challenging his ouster.
During the resumed hearing on Wednesday, Nandgarh produced the appointment letter issued by the SGPC in 2003.
Speaking after the hearing, senior lawyer KTS Tulsi, who is appearing for Nandgarh, said the letter did not say anything about the terms of appointment and merely mentioned the SGPC executive committee’s resolution on his appointment. The HC has sought the SGPC’s reply by August 4.
During the previous hearing, the HC had directed Nandgarh to procure the appointment letter from SGPC and produce it before the court.
He was sacked on January 17 following his opposition to the Bikrami (Hindu) calendar for Sikhs and support for the original Nanakshahi calendar. In his petition, he has sought that his sacking order be quashed and the SGPC be asked to restore him on his post.
He has submitted that the SGPC gave him no notice seeking his version, adding that the sacking order passed at an SGPC executive meeting without prior notice was illegal. He has also challenged the SGPC’s powers to dismiss a Takht jathedar.
