Providing relief to more than 600 families, a division bench of the Punjab and Haryana high court comprising justice Ajay Kumar Mittal and justice Jaspal Singh on Friday stayed dispossession of members of the PSEB (Punjab State Electricity Board) Employees Joint Forum till the next date of hearing.
The Employees Joint Forum and two Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) employees had filed a petition against the decision dated August 13 of a committee headed by deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, directing the PSPCL to transfer around 100 acres of land to the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA). The order included two chunks of land: 10.82 acres over which there are PSPCL offices and 16 residences of group A employees of the PSPCL, and 21.07 acres on which there are 600 houses of Group B, C and D employees.
The land is to be used for the construction of a huge residential-cum-commercial complex. The petitioner forum and two others had submitted that the PSPCL was to hand over this land to GLADA on or before December 31. It was added that no arrangement had been made for the construction of residential houses for 600 families of PSPCL employees in the upcoming residential-cum-commercial complex and they might be shifted to rented accommodation.
Counsel for the petitioners on Friday argued that uprooting such a huge number of families of employees from their residential houses, where most of them were residing for the past two decades or so, without making any alternative provision for them in the proposed huge residential-cum-commercial complex or elsewhere, was highly arbitrary.
The case shall now come up for further hearing on January 14.
