The Punjab and Haryana high court has summoned Haryana chief secretary SC Chaudhary seeking explanation as to why the status report with regard to filling up of the vacant posts of doctors across the state has not been filed even after taking a time of three months.

The directions came from the division bench comprising chief justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and justice Arun Palli on Friday.

In July last year, after learning about the shortage of 631 doctors, largely in reserve categories, in Haryana due to the non-availability of candidates in spite of repeated advertisements, the high court had suggested the state government to de-reserve the seats for general candidates so that public health facilities do not suffer, especially in rural areas.

The high court had taken suo motu notice of a news report that highlighted an incident in which a woman was shooed away by general hospital, Fatehabad, and had later delivered a baby on the road on April 7 last year.

The report mentioned that while the woman was crying in pain, doctors told her family to take her to Agroha or Hisar since they did not have the facility to carry out delivery.

The case would now come up for hearing on March 7.
