The Punjab and Haryana high court on Monday directed the Punjab government to constitute a special investigation team (SIT) into the allegations of threat to life by a Ludhiana woman against Fastway managing director (MD) Gurdeep Singh.

The HC order came on the woman’s petition, filed in March. She had alleged that Gurdeep induced her into marriage in 2009, saying that his wife was suffering from a life-threatening disease, but they did not go public with the marriage.

The petitioner had alleged that she was repeatedly forced to undergo abortion during this period and recently, when she told Gurdeep to stay away and let her be free of the relationship, she and her family were allegedly abused and threatened with dire consequences, the petitioner had alleged.

During the resumed hearing, the Punjab government, in its reply, told the high court that the woman had been provided security. But it denied the allegations of the petitioner’s harassment by police at the behest of Gurdeep, whom she had accused of exploiting his political connections to threaten her. The HC has disposed of the petition, directing the government to constitute an SIT to look into the woman’s allegations.
