The Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday directed Punjab and Haryana to carry out inspection of all school buses and submit reports within two weeks about the safety of these buses. It was made clear that if the states failed to give correct reports, officials concerned would be held responsible. The court said it could also appoint court commissioners to carry out inspections if the states failed to submit proper reports.
The directions came during resumed hearing of a case about traffic-related issues of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. On the previous date of hearing, the court had directed both states to inform whether they had circulated their policy regarding specifications and rules of school buses to all schools.
Both states informed the court on Friday that all schools had been made aware of the state guidelines on school buses.
But the court said it seemed that the state authorities were not carrying out inspections of school buses since very old ones could be seen on roads.
