Haryana minister for PWD and industries Randeep Singh Surjewala has said helping Sikhs of Haryana to form a separate Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee for the state was a part of the Congress manifesto for the 2005 elections and that the party was only trying to fulfil its commitment now.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Hooda advised Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal to refrain from meddling with the affairs of Haryana and think about the welfare of the people of their own state. Surjewala said the Congress was lending support for the formation of a Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (HSGPC) keeping in mind the strong feelings of the Sikh community in this state.

He said the Congress respected the feelings of all communities. There was an overwhelming demand for the formation of such a committee for the past several years and the Congress government led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda was of the view was that the demand was based on principles of justice, Surjewala said. “Hence, the support to the idea of a new committee.”

Surjewala said when Sikhs were allowed to have separate Gurdwara Parbandhak Committees in Delhi and some other places, what was wrong if Sikhs of Haryana, too, want to have a separate committee of their own.
