The Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday dismissed a petition challenging the ban in Punjab on the screening of the movie “MSG: The Messenger”, which features controversial Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh as lead actor.

Hakikat Entertainment, which has produced the movie, had challenged the Punjab government notification of January 17 that had banned the movie in the state citing law and order issues. Its lawyer, Ashutosh Kaushik, submitted that the government order was illegal; and maintaining law and order was the duty of the state, which it had performed in many previous instances of opposed screenings.

The petition was listed before the bench of justice AG Masih, which refused to stay the ban notification. Later, it was dismissed as withdrawn with liberty to file a fresh petition. The movie was released on February 13 in Haryana and Chandigarh. Some groups had moved the high court against it but failed to get it off those screens.
