The Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday reserved judgment on the SAS Nagar mayoral elections.

Earlier on March 11, the HC while hearing the petition had stayed convening of MC meeting for the election of mayor till further orders.

The petitioners - two winning councillors Amrik Singh and MS Sethi - had challenged the government decision of reserving the mayor's post for women.

The councillors had contended that government's decision was contrary to the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976, and the 1996 rules framed on the reservation of mayor's offices in corporations. They had also questioned the government's move of declaring the seat reserved after the elections were conducted in February and termed it vitiated.

The government on the other hand has defended its move of reserving the mayor's post stating that reservation was as per the law and the roster was finalised as per the notification of 2012, in accordance with the amended rules for these elections.

Following the arguments concluded on Wednesday, the bench of justice Jaswant Singh reserved the judgment.
