The Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday stayed the elections for the post of mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor of SAS Nagar municipal corporation.

The elections to the post of mayor were to be held on March 11. The mandatory 72-hour notice before the elections was given on Sunday evening.

The mayor is elected by voting through show of hands at the MC Bhawan. After the results on February 22, the Kulwant Singh-led group of Independents won 11 seats while two other Independents managed two seats making the tally to 13.

Meanwhile, the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (SAD-BJP) alliance ended up winning 14 and 22 seats, respectively. But with no party getting the majority to elect the mayor, the Congress and the SAD-BJP are depending upon Independents to see their mayoral candidates through.

Kulwant Singh contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on the SAD ticket from Fatehgarh Sahib.

The rebel group led by Kulwant was formed after differences with SAD leader Balwant Singh Ramoowalia.
