The high-powered purchase committee constituted by the Haryana government under the chairmanship of finance minister Capt Abhimanyu has decided 21 cases valuing Rs 151 crore in meetings held on December 9 and 19, leading to saving of more than Rs 3.25 lakh over the lowest rates.
An official spokesman said the prominent cases included the contract for the publication of text books for Classes 1 to 8 students for the 2015-16 academic session and generic allopathic medicines, both of which would be provided free of cost to students and patients, respectively, of the state.
The issue pertaining to free books for students courted controversy during the previous regime of the Congress, which had failed to deliver books to students for almost entire academic session.
The spokesman added that the committee also reviewed the purchase procedure and noted that all the departments were not inviting tenders through online mode.
In some cases, the tender response was not adequate as a limited number of bidders had participated. In order to improve competitive bidding and to ensure transparency, the committee decided to issue guidelines to all the government departments, boards and corporations to switch over to online tendering.
