Higher education plays a pivotal role in national development and India should stand by the purpose for which the Universities are established, Vice- Chancellor of Punjab University Chandigarh Prof Arun Kumar Grover has said.

Prof Grover was here to deliver the third foundation day lecture of Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP) organised at its Temporary Academic Block at Shahpur today. The function was presided over by CUHP vice- chancellor Prof Yoginder Singh Verma.

He delivered a lecture on the topic "Higher Education in India with Special Reference to Developments in North- West Region".

Addressing the gathering of CUHP students, faculty and non- teaching staff, Prof Grover said that higher education contributes in national development through propagation of specialized skills as a result of which India has witnessed an impressive growth over the years.

Referring to eminent scientists like Sir Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, Dr Homi J. Bhabha and Prof. Har Gobind Khorana, Prof Grover said India should stand by the purpose for which universities are made.

"Competent teachers and students should be selected by the universities impartially. If it happens, students and teachers will surely contribute to the progress of the institutions," said Prof Grover.

He suggested to give a free hands to teachers to devise the pedagogy and they should be encouraged them to do more research.

"Creating your own USP (Unique Selling Price) is a good thing. Let people have choices, more experimentations and good things will come out automatically," Dr. Grover asserted.

Speaking on the occasion CUHP VC Prof Verma asserted that higher education could bring in a social change and there was a need to have linkage between stakeholders and community.

"Objectivity, participation, transparency, good governance and digitalisation are the need of the hour to achieve sustainable progress.

Dean Student Welfare, Prof. HR Sharma, Proctor, Dr. Roshan Lal Sharma, Finance Officer, BR Dhiman, Dens and Heads of all the departments were present on the occasion.
