The Himachal Pradesh unit of the Congress on Saturday sought probe into former Haryana minister Gopal Kanda's purported investment in a private university in Kangra.
"The BJP government is under cloud for facilitating the minister to invest in a private university. It should make public the investment details and reveal the names of politicians who helped Kanda," Himachal Congress affairs in charge Birender Singh said.
The Congress had been opposing the BJP government's policy, synonymous with the interests of the land mafia, to promote private universities in the state, said Singh, who is also the Congress general secretary. "Private universities are no more than money-minting machines. Those at the helm of these universities have no knowledge about education."
The Congress leader said the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the BJP's student's wing, had accused the Himachal government of promoting private educational institutions and universities in the state. Citing an ABVP's recent survey 'Education is for sale', he said the government had been providing land to 'outsiders' by relaxing norms in the name of opening private professional universities and colleges. "The number of private universities in the state far exceeds government colleges," the report read.
"Under what compulsion did chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal granted permission to so many private universities to set up base in the state when education standards in Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) have deteriorated over the years," he said.
Singh said that on returning to power, the Congress would investigate into all permissions granted to 16 private universities. "The managements of all universities have purchased land from poor farmers by posing as educational charitable trusts," he added
Mahajan hits out at Satpal Jain (BOX)
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) member Harsh Mahajan criticised BJP member Satya Pal Jain for threatening the HPCC chief to move court in a matter pertaining to his income.
Mahajan said Jain was in a habit of issuing threats of legal action against leaders of Himachal Pradesh.
"Nobody is afraid of Jain. He is free move court, where he will get a befitting reply. Himachal leaders have self-respect and pride and are not going to be bogged down by such threats from outsiders," the Congress leader said. He said the BJP was making false allegations against HPCC chief Virbhadra Singh to derive political mileage.
