The Himachal Pradesh government will spend Rs 6.50 crore on providing free "netbooks" to 4,000 top-performing government school students, who have passed Class 10 this year, the state cabinet decided in a meeting here on Wednesday.

During the meeting chaired by chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, the cabinet also decided to grant a 5% concession in power tariff to industrial units that began operations after April 1this year. The decision is likely to benefit industrial units with high power consumption.

The cabinet also approved that developers executing hydro-electric projects in the state would be permitted to transfer ownership by way of selling equity stakes beyond 51% after a six-month stability period from the date of achieving commercial operation of the project instead of the current two years. The provision will be applicable to projects of all sizes.
