Chander Mohan of the Haryana Janhit Congress withdraws his candidature from Karnal Lok Sabha seat. An industrialist from Panipat, Avinash Paliwal, is likely to be fielded from Karnal.
An ex-deputy CM with the Hooda government, Chander Mohan's candidature was announced by his younger brother and HJC supremo Kuldeep Bishnoi at Hisar.
Initially, the HJC had announced to induct Venod Sharma, the Congress legislator from Ambala City, but the senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj strongly opposed the move. Sources said conviction of Sharma’s son Manu in the Jessica Lal murder case, in which role of the veteran Congress leader was also under scanner, was the main reason behind the BJP’s objection.
Bishnoi had publicly resented the BJP’s move as a direct “interference in the Haryana Janhit Congress working”.
But sources said Chander Mohan and his family had vehemently rejected Bishnoi’s efforts to welcome Sharma into the party fold.
Chander Mohan, who had represented Kalka assembly segment four times a row, remained in controversy after he went missing in 2008.
He reemerged in December 2008 to announce his conversion to Islam as Chand Mohammad. Chander Mohan had embraced Islam to marry Anuradha Bali alias Fiza, former additional advocate general of the Haryana government. At that time, he was already married and had two children. He was disowned by the Bhajan Lal clan and ostracised from the Bishnoi community. Following an uproar, chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda dropped Chander Mohan as his deputy.
Even since the controversy broke out, Chander Mohan was maintaining a low public profile.
A few months later, he separated from Fiza and was taken back into the Bishnoi community. Fiza was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her SAS Nagar house on August 6, 2012.
Chander Mohan’s father and former Haryana chief minister and his younger brother had floated the Haryana Janhit Congress in December 2007 but the former preferred to remain deputy chief minister and did not leave the Congress.
