Hockey : Patiala to lock horns with Mizoram in national junior championship final

Chandigarh Olympic Association went down fighting to Hockey Mizoram 2-3 in the semi-finals of the 5th subjunior hockey India national championship (women) Division B, held in Ranchi, on Monday. The Chandigarh team was in dominant form throughout the tournament and were among the favourites to reach the final.

Chandigarh Olympic Association went down fighting to Hockey Mizoram 2-3 in the semi-finals of the 5th sub-junior hockey India national championship (women) Division B, held in Ranchi, on Monday. The Chandigarh team was in dominant form throughout the tournament and were among the favourites to reach the final.

However, they ran out of steam at the penultimate stage and bowed out of the tournament after losing to Mizoram.

In another semi-final encounter, Hockey Patiala registered a facile 3-0 win over Hockey Bhopal and made it to the final.

The first semi final clash between Hockey Mizoram and Chandigarh Olympic Association turned out to be an engaging duel between two exciting sides.

It was the Chandigarh team who drew the first blood. Shalu Mann opened the account for Chandigarh through a field effort in the seventh minute of the game.

Thereafter, both the sides took a cautious approach and the players kept the ball in the midfield.

At the end of an entertaining first half, the Chandigarh team was leading 1-0.

After the break, Hockey Mizoram were off to a flying start as they managed to score the equalising goal. In the 38th minute, F Lalawmpwii sounded the board to make it 1-1.

Then, in the 49th minute, Hockey Mizoram scored when a beautifully smashed goal by Lalaremsiami helped the team take a 2-1 lead.

The Chandigarh team gave a befitting reply and scored the equalising goal in the 65th minute when Akshita Yadav outsmarted the opposition defenders to score.

However in the very next minute, Hockey Mizoram again took the lead through Lalremsiami. Mizoram held on to the lead and made it to the final.

Meanwhile, in the second semi-final, Hockey Patiala easily beat Hockey Bhopal 3-0. Both the teams took the field looking to secure a berth in the final.

However, despite numerous scoring opporunities, both the sides failed to open their account.

After failing to break the deadlock in the first thirty minutes, Hockey Patiala took the lead in the 33rd minute as Baljinder Kaur scored a brilliant field goal.

After taking the lead, Hockey Patiala continued to pile pressure on th opposition team.
