A Class-4 student of a local school was beaten with a stick by her teacher on Saturday for not doing homework.

Jasmine Walia (9), a student of Lord Mahabir Jain Public School here on the Hoshiarpur road, sustained injuries on the arms, legs and lips. She was admitted to the civil hospital. A complaint has been filed with the police against the teacher, identified as Neha.

Talking to HT, the girl's mother, Anju Walia, said when Jasmine returned home from school on Saturday, she told her that she was first slapped by the teacher for not doing homework. When Jasmine tried to cover her face with her hands, the teacher started thrashing her with a stick, Anju said.

Anju, whose husband is currently abroad, said she informed the school principal, who promised to look into the matter on Monday. However, when Jasmine woke up on Sunday morning with fever and acute pain in the arms and on the lips, she apprised her relatives of the matter. They admitted the girl to the hospital and informed the police.

The police recorded the girl's statement on Monday. The doctors conducted an X-ray on her jaws and teeth, whose report would be available on Tuesday.

Vicky Walia, the girl's uncle, said the school authorities had approached the family on Monday for a compromise, but he had told them that it was not possible at this stage.

Sarwan Singh Ball, station house officer (city), said the police would register a case as per the girl's statement if the family wanted to pursue the matter.

Terming the incident unfortunate, school representative Rajnish Sharma said the management would take action against the teacher. He confirmed that the school had approached the girl's family to resolve the matter.
