A double murder in the name of honour came to light on Thursday at a village in this district. A minor girl (15) and her boyfriend (19), who eloped on Monday, are the victims, while the seven accused from her family include her brother.

Both victims were from Sahansara village. The police registered a case at C Division here against the girl’s brother, Seettu; cousins Heera and Saabi; uncles Lakhwinder Singh and Babba (uncle); and relatives Jasbir Singh and Bikka after the bodies were found on Thursday from Ranewali village near Rajasansi. “The victims had been poisoned. The boy had also been attacked with sharp-edged weapons,” said a police officer.

“When the girl eloped on August 25, her family made a complaint of abduction at Chandher village against her boyfriend, Lovepreet Singh, and some other members of his family,” Amritsar (rural) senior superintendent of police (SSP) Jasdeep Singh said here on Thursday.

Initial investigation suggests that on Tuesday (August 26), the boy took the girl to the house of his sister in Amritsar’s Gujjarpura area but Seettu came to know about it. “He got there with two other people and kidnapped Lovepreet and his sister,” said the SSP.

Since the police were hunting for the two already, they found the bodies eventually. “The victims belonged to the same caste but the girl’s family disapproved of the relation and was angry over the abduction,” said the SSP.

“It started out as a case registered under sections 364 (abduction) and 34 (common intent in crime) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and when the killings came to light, we added Section 302 (murder) to it,” said assistant commissioner of police (south) Balkrishan Singla. “Of the seven people involved, we have arrested girl’s uncle Lakhwinder Singh and relative Jasbir Singh, while a hunt is on for the rest,” he added.
