Hospital to pay Rs 10 lakh for failing to treat bedsores

For failing to treat a 96-year-old woman for bedsores and preventing infections acquired during treatment, the state consumer disputes redressal commission, Punjab, has directed Fortis hospital, along with its medical director and the doctor concerned, to pay Rs 10 lakh for “medical negligence and deficiency in services” to a Sector-40 family.

Mohinder Kaur, the mother of the complainants, Manmohan Singh and his brothers Davinder Singh and Dr Pritpaul Singh, was admitted to the hospital on July 30, 2010, and remained there up to September 13, 2010, following complaints of dehydration and reduced oral intake.

The patient’s family had alleged that owing to failure of the hospital as well as the staff in providing her proper medical care, she developed bedsores as well as other infections. Mohinder Kaur died on September 14, 2010, after being discharged from the hospital.

The complainants alleged that after the discharge, the medical record of the patient was not supplied, even after routing the application through the RTI.

Getting no satisfactory response to their pleas, the complainants moved the consumer commission, accusing Fortis Hospital, Phase 8, SAS Nagar, Dr Gurbir Singh, medical director of the hospital, and Dr Vishal Bhambri, medical consultant, of medical negligence as well as deficiency in services in treating their mother.
