Under intense attack from opposition Congress over corruption charges, Himachal health minister Dr Rajiv Bindal took everyone by surprise on Monday by submitting his resignation to chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal in the Vidhan Sabha.

The Congress had intensified its demand for dropping Dr Bindal, with party MLAs moving an adjournment motion in assembly to seek discussion on corruption charges leveled against the health minister.

Speaker Tulsi Ram however rejected the Congress demand, after which opposition members walked into the well of the House and began to raise slogans. The speaker went ahead with the Question Hour even as nothing could be heard in the din.

Soon after Question Hour ended, chief minister Dhumal listed the week's business in the House.

Before a discussion of the motion of thanks to the Governor's address was taken up, Bindal rose to make a suo motu statement that was full of rhetoric and sentiment.

After finishing his speech, he walked up Dhumal and handed over his resignation.

Later, Bindal told mediapersons that he felt "hurt" over the opposition party's stance against him.He claimed that he had become "victim of politics" and corruption charges against him held no ground.
