The Himachal Police have arrested two persons on charges of sedition for their threat to seek China’s help over lack of development in the villages across the Pin valley in Lahaul and Spiti district.
Police registered a case against Lovang Tandup, former pardhan of the gram panchayat Sagnam, and Chhring Topgey, pardhan of the Kungari panchyat in the Pin valley. The case was registered under sections 124 and 34 of the Indian penal code.
The two had criticised the successive governments for the lack of development in the area and had gone on record on TV channels that if the government does not pay heed to their demands, they would seek China’s help. Inhabitants of a dozen villagers have been perturbed, particularly over the snapping of the road connectivity in the area for the past one year. Due to the rapidly melting glaciers, the rivulets in Pin valley had swelled and washed away the main bridge at Kiri nullah.
The villagers’ announcement to seek help from China had raised hackles among both the central and state governments.
In the wake of the threat by villagers, the government had ordered a probe to ascertain the facts and the remarks made by the villagers. Police questioned scores of villagers in the Pin valley.
Sources told Hindustan Times that more cases could be registered against villagers for their announcement to seek help from China.
