The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court, Haryana, sentenced two people to 5-year rigorous imprisonment for an insurance fraud of over Rs 14 lakh at the Oriental Insurance Company Ltd in Karnal.

Development officer Sunil Kumar Chopra and cashier Satish were convicted of embezzling premium money of customers of the insurance company. They were also fined Rs 4.5 lakh each.

The fraud was detected in 2005 and the same year, the case was handed over to the CBI. The embezzlement came to light when the company issued a list of defaulters and affected customers approached them with receipts.

The investigation agency found that both the accused had been siphoning off the premium from the customers instead of depositing the same in their accounts.

After the trial, both were convicted of criminal breach of trust by public servant, criminal conspiracy, and falsification of accounts, along with sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The accused refused to pay the fine and now have to undergo additional imprisonment of 15 months.
