I am because of Hockey and will work for betterment of sports: Pargat
Former olympian and captain of Indian hockey team, who won the assembly election from the Jalandhar cantonment constituency expressed that he is at this position because of hockey and he will keep on working for the betterment of the sports in state as an elected representative of people.chandigarh Updated: Mar 11, 2012 22:43 IST
Feeling elated on being greeted by people at Sansarpur hockey association in village Sansarpur near here on Sunday former olympian and captain of Indian hockey team, who won the assembly election from the Jalandhar cantonment constituency expressed that he is at this position because of hockey and he will keep on working for the betterment of the sports in state as an elected representative of people.
Talking to media persons Pargat Singh said he can not express the feeling of being felicitated by the association after being elected as an MLA.
Seeming ambitious to be the sports minister in the new government, he said to keep on working with a commitment whatever responsibility one person is given is of utmost importance and whatever responsibility the party will give to him, he will try to fulfill it with full promise.
“Promoting sports is the best way to secure the youth from the menace of drugs and I will work in that direction. To get strengthen the existing sports infrastructure in state to benefit the youth will be his main objective,” he expressed.
Expressing his concern for the constituency he said the planned overall development of the constituency will be his priority. “He will ensure that a master plan is prepared for the planned development in the constituency,” he said.
Earlier people from the area and members of association gave a rousing welcome to newly elected MLA. Pargat Singh also met with the budding hockey players at the association.
Selector Indian hockey team Col Balbir Singh expressing delight over the victory of Pargat Singh said former olympian has created history by getting elected as an MLA.
“It is not a matter of pride for the state only but also for the whole country that former olympian has been elected as an MLA,” he said.
“Being former sportsperson Pargat Singh should be given a major responsibility in the new government so that he could work for the betterment of sports in state,” he said.
