'I brought in Rs 25,000-crore projects. Why won’t the voters re-elect me?’

What were your achievements during your five-year term?Partap Bajwa: There are close to 1 lakh defence personnel and ex-servicemen in the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency — the highest in Punjab. I raised ‘one rank, one pension’ demand in and outside the Lok Sabha. About 70% of the issue stands resolved, while the rest would be addressed during the last phase of this government.

What were your achievements during your five-year term?
Partap Bajwa:
There are close to 1 lakh defence personnel and ex-servicemen in the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency — the highest in Punjab. I raised ‘one rank, one pension’ demand in and outside the Lok Sabha. About 70% of the issue stands resolved, while the rest would be addressed during the last phase of this government.

I spearheaded the issue of the direct link between Kartarpur Sahib and Dera Baba Nanak and floated a proposal before the Prime Minister that India can give a couple of uninhabited villages to Pakistan and take the gurdwara land back where Guru Nanak had spent the last 18 years of his life. But the whole issue is dependent on Pakistan.

Getting the Ranjit Sagar dam declared a national project by the PM, leading to the Centre sanctioning Rs 2,500 crore, and the rail link between Batala and Qadian are among my other achievements.

What’s that you had wished to do as an MP but couldn’t? And why?
The Batala-Qadian rail link has failed to become a reality due to Akali activists, who stopped the rail link survey despite repeated letters from the railways to Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal and the chief secretary. Badal scuttled my move of setting up a rail coach factory at Kalanaur, where Emperor Akbar was coronated. Then railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal had called up Badal, requesting him to give 1,200-acre land at Kalanaur. In that village, 1,600-acre land is with the panchayat. The Rs 15,000-crore project went to Haryana due to the politics Badal played. Badal also scuttled my initiative for Central University and the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT).

Would you contest again?
I have left this to the party high command. If they want to field me, I am willing to fight 100%.

Why should people re-elect you?
They should elect me for all the reasons I have listed earlier. I am a local, while the BJP candidate (Vinod Khanna) lives 3,000 km away and has never been here for more than five days in five years. I have fought for my area; brought in a lot of projects despite Badal scuttling all major projects. I brought in Rs 25,000-crore projects. Why would they not re-elect me?
