Acting on complaints lodged by the industries department, the police have registered 29 cases against persons and groups indulging in illegal mining at various locations across the state.

The department wrote to the police after these persons were found carrying out illegal mining in raids conducted over the past three days.

Industries and commerce minister Anil Joshi said the mining officers had been asked to act tough against those involved in illegal mining. He said that out of the 29 FIRs, seven were lodged in Amritsar district, four in Pathankot, two in Ferozepur, one in Hoshiarpur, eight in Ludhiana, two in Moga, three in Ropar and two in Nawanshahr.

Joshi said the general public could lodge their complaints regarding illegal mining with the general manager-cum-district mining officers. He said the department was actively pursuing with the Centre the case for obtaining environmental clearance in respect of 95 category-A mining projects, which would enable the state to auction these quarries.
