Illegal mining: HC seeks names of erring officials

chandigarh Updated: Feb 24, 2012 13:07 IST

Taking a serious view of a petition alleging large-scale illegal mining on the Yamuna river basin in the state's Karnal, Panipat and Sonepat districts, the Punjab and Haryana high court has directed the Haryana government to submit a list of names of all officials responsible for ensuring law and order in the area when the illegal mining was in progress.

The directions came from a division bench headed by chief justice Ranjan Gogoi on a petition filed by one Kaptan Singh and six other villagers of Atta in Panipat's Samalkha tehsil.

The petitioners had submitted that sand mining was going on illegally in contravention of the Environment Protection Act, 1986 in the area due to its proximity to Delhi where the sand is in huge demand for construction work.

It was also submitted that mining was disturbing the ecological system and creating public nuisance due to noise pollution because of use of heavy machinery without proper permission from authorities concerned. The matter would now come up for hearing on March 3.
