Indian Medical Association (IMA), Rupnagar, on Friday, strongly condemned the violence by relatives of the patient against the doctors and other staff at the primary health centre (PHC), Bassi Pathana, on Januuary 27.

In a statement issued here on Friday IMA Rupnagar president Dr Ajay Jindal and secretary Dr BPS Parmar said it was unfortunate that inspite of guidelines issued by the Supreme Court, police arrested Bassi Pathana senior medical officer (SMO) Dr Rajendra Kumar and detained him overnight for no fault of his own.

They expressed concern over the unruly behaviour of relatives of a female patient, who indulged in violence and manhandling after the unfortunate death of the patient.

"To blame the doctors, without proper enquiry, is highly condemnable and it creates an fearful atmosphere among medical staff,"the IMA statement said.

IMA further demanded that culprits be booked under the Punjab Protection of Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions ( Prevention of Violence and Damage to property) Act 2008 and should be punished accordingly.
