Municipal corporation (MC) of Chandigarh has challaned 150 violators for misusing water in the past 15 days as part of a challaning drive here. The civic body began the drive to check wastage of potable water supplied to city residents during the morning hours (5.30am to 9am) from April 15 to June 30.

MC formed 16 teams comprising three members each to challan those misusing potable water with a fine of Rs 2,000.

BK Dhawan, executive engineer, MC, said, “In the past 15 days, a fine of Rs 3 lakh has been imposed. This year, there are less number of challans compared to last year.

We have also issued around 550 notices to violators for wastage of water this year. Last year, over 1,000 violators were challaned, and a fine of Rs 20 lakh was collected.”

He added that this year, they were issuing notices to residents for wastage or misuse of water due to overflow from overhead or underground water tanks, leaks in pipeline from ferrule to water meters, and leaks and overflow from desert coolers.

“We are giving them time to repair the same, but if they continue to leak, a fine of Rs 2,000 will be imposed,” he added.
