In Mohali’s public toilets, sanitation takes a back seat

Public toilets in SAS Nagar are largely unclean due to the apathy of the municipal corporation. The toilets opposite the court complex in the Phase 3B2 market are not well maintained. Water taps have not been installed and the toilets have not been cleaned in a long time.

Public toilets in SAS Nagar are largely unclean due to the apathy of the municipal corporation. The toilets opposite the court complex in the Phase 3B2 market are not well maintained. Water taps have not been installed and the toilets have not been cleaned in a long time.

There is no supply to water either. The care taker of the toilets said the civic body was unable to get the toilets cleaned due to the absence of water supply. However, toilets in the market area near the Sheetal Departmental Store present a contrasting picture.

The toilets for men and women are clean and well maintained. A board placed outside the toilet lists the time during which the toilets will be open.

The board also contains a telephone number, on which a person can call to file complaints or provide feedback.

Sources say that caretakers stayed near these toilets and kept a track on their maintenance.

Sources also say the toilets are being cleaned regularly as the civic body had outsourced the contract to a private firm. However, public toilets in the markets in Phases 5, 9, 7 and 11 have failed on the cleanliness front.
