Industrialists in Phase 8-B, Industrial Area, of SAS Nagar resented the burning of garbage at a dumping ground in the same phase.

They complained that due to burning of garbage from past one week, foul smell had been emanating and smoke had engulfed the entire area where the top IT firms are located.

Nikhil Saraf, president of Mohali Industry and Commerce Association, said: "From past one week, it is difficult even to work.Despite repeated requests, they continue to burn the garbage. The burning wastes produce smoke and an unpleasant smell. It also pollutes the entire area."

The industrialists alleged that municipal corporation is blatantly flouting all rules under the Municipal Solid Waste Rules 2000.

Even the waste thrown at the dumping site is not covered by soil; neither herbal sanitiser is sprayed in the area that remains covered with foul smell all the time.

Besides, neglected pools have turned to the breeding ground of mosquitoes. No enclosure of the site has been done.

Tree plantation had been done in February, but till date nothing has started.

However, additional commissioner (technical) MC, BD Singla said, "We don't know how the garbage caught fire, but we are trying to control it from past six days.

Hopefully, the problem will be sorted by Thursday."
