Nearly 30 shops were gutted in a major fire that broke out in the Sector-53 furniture market on Monday night. The incident came to light when a passerby noticed smoke billowing out from one of the shops at around 10.30 pm. Within minutes, the fire spread and engulfed nearly 30 shops. Two people got injured in the fire and were shifted to the GMSH-16.

Nine fire tenders, seven from the UT fire department and two from SAS Nagar, were rushed to the spot to control the flames.

Chief fire officer, Chandigarh, Rajiv Gupta said, "We received a call at around 11.03pm. We sent seven fire tenders to the spot. It was a major fire and our men found it difficult to control the flames."

The reason behind the fire and the loss could not be ascertained yet.

Meanwhile, senior police officials, area sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) and fire officers also rushed to the spot.

Earlier, in January 2009, eight shops were gutted in a fire that broke out in the same market.
