Putting to rest all speculations, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) on Tuesday put their best foot forward by fielding Hisar MP Dushyant Chautala as the party candidate from Uchana Kalan assembly constituency and his mother Naina Singh from the Dabwali assembly segment.
Dushyant’s grandfather and former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala, who is currently in jail, won from Uchana in 2009 by defeating Congress stalwart Birender Singh on his home turf, only by a narrow margin of about 600 votes.
And the Dabwali seat was wrested by Dushyant’s father Ajay Singh Chautala in the 2009 assembly polls.
However, now that both Om Prakash Chautala and his son Ajay Singh have been disqualified from contesting elections after their conviction in the JBT teachers’ recruitment scam, the INLD have fielded the mother-son duo from these seats. The former CM and his son have been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in the case.
In the recently-held Lok Sabha elections, Dushyant had led from the Uchana Kalan segment by over 50,000 votes while winning the Hisar Lok Sabha seat against Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) chief Kuldeep Bishnoi.
25-year-old Dushyant, who is the youngest MP in the Lok Sabha, won the Hisar seat despite trailing in six assembly segments.
But he gained huge leads in three Jat-dominated segments of Uchana Kalan, Narnaund and Uklana and managed to win the seat.
In the upcoming assembly polls, he will face Prem Lata Singh, wife of turncoat Birender Singh, who is contesting on a BJP ticket.
Ajay Singh’s wife and Dushyant’s mother, Naina Singh is a first-timer in politics. She is likely to compete against Ajay’s uncle, Dr Kamalveer Singh of the Congress.
That a Chautala family member will be fielded from the Uchana and Dabwali assembly seats was expected. Speculations were rife that Om Prakash Chautala’s wife Sneh Lata or his younger son Abhay Singh, who is also contesting from Ellenabad, may be fielded from Uchana Kalan.
The party has also fielded Bachan Kaur, wife of another imprisoned INLD leader Sher Singh Badshami, from the Ladwa assembly seat. Badshami has also been barred from contesting the polls, following his conviction in the JBT scam along with the Chautalas.
Meanwhile, disgruntled BJP leaders Chander Bhatia and Parvesh Mehta have been fielded from Badkhal and Faridabad assembly constituencies respectively.
The INLD also named Neelam Narang from the Panipat City seat and Fakir Chand from Kalanaur (reserve) seat. Neelam is the wife of Panipat City unit president Dr Madan Lal Narang while Fakir Chand is a former tehsildar.
Now, the INLD has announced all its 88 candidates for the Haryana polls. The party has given two tickets to its ally Shiromani Akali Dal.
