The police arrested an international karate player in Phase 4 here on Monday on the charge of drug smuggling and recovered 150-gm heroin from his possession. The police claimed that the heroin was worth Rs 75 lakh, as per the international market price.
The accused has been identified as Balbir Singh alias Balla (27), a native of Bhajora village in Tarn Taran.
The police stated that during the preliminary investigation, it was learnt that the accused won the gold in an international karate meet held at Jalandhar in 2012. Balbir also told the police that around six months ago, he had played a national-level tournament at Batala (Gurdaspur district).
The accused confessed before the media that this was the first time he was delivering drugs from Tarn Taran to SAS Nagar. Accusing the Punjab government of apathy towards the youth, Balbir said he took to crime due to unemployment as he belonged to a poor family.
Police sources said Balbir revealed that he had been promised Rs 5,000 for delivering the drugs.
The police also revealed that he was involved in a kidnapping at his native place a few years ago.
Station house officer (SHO) Rajiv Kumar stated that on a tip-off, the police zeroed in on the accused and found heroin from his possession. He tried to flee, was but nabbed on the spot.
A case has been registered against him under sections 21, 61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The police produced him before the local court, from where he was sent to one-day police remand.
