Invoking the Ramayana and Mahabharata and putting his foot firmly in his mouth yet again, yoga guru Ramdev on Wednesday said Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi were worse than Ravana, Surpanakha and Pootna. Addressing the media here, Ramdev said, "At least Ravana built Lanka after snatching money from people. These people (Congress) are worse than even the British (colonialists). They are looting people’s money and putting it into foreign banks."
Supporting BJP’s Chandigarh candidate Kirron Kher, Ramdev described sitting MP and Congress candidate Pawan Kumar Bansal as "most corrupt" and "political blot" on Chandigarh. He claimed Kher would "wash away the blot". He blamed Bansal for engineering a midnight raid in Delhi, when supporters of Ramdev were canecharged by the police two years ago as Ramdev was sitting there on an anti-corruption dharna.
Kher, who later reached the venue of the press conference, sought blessings from Ramdev and targeted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in her address, saying that the AAP was "confused about its ideology".
To a question, Ramdev said the time had come for AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal to join the BJP and "stop playing into the hands of Congress". "I am ready to mediate if Kejriwal wants to join the BJP."
He went national too. Terming the Congress chief a “mastermind of corruption”, he said that she was a "looteri bahu (robber daughter-in-law)". He declared that in the Hindispeaking states, the Congress would be wiped out as he had seen “tremendous support” for BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
He blamed the "Nehru dynasty" for the division of India. As reporters questioned him why he was soft on BJP leaders but targeting Congress leaders on corruption and other issues, he said: "Nehru was the biggest khalnayak (villain). I don’t think he will be in heaven."
He defended Punjab deputy chief minister and Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Badal campaigning for Indian National Lok Dal ( INLD) candidate Dushyant Chautala despite SAD’s partner BJP fighting the INLD in Haryana. Ramdev said Dushyant, grandson of former Haryana CM OP Chautala, "is a good boy", "so there is no problem in Sukhbir campaigning for him."
But he ducked questions on whether he would campaign for BJP candidate from Gurdaspur, Vinod Khanna, where Ramdev had reportedly been trying to field one of his own aides: "I will campaign for BJP candidates in Punjab and Haryana."
