The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will collect pieces of iron from all villages, including Haryana's, in the country for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's 'Statue of unity' in Gujarat.
"A statue of 'Iron Man' Sardar Patel will be installed at Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat's Vadodara district. It will be double the length of the Statue of Liberty in the US," BJP Kisan Morcha president OP Dhankar told the media here on Tuesday. He is the national coordinator for the collection iron pieces for the statue.
"Patel's statue will be 182m (600 ft) tall, close to the height of a 60-storey building. The Statue of Liberty is 93m high," he said. Pieces of iron put to household or agricultural use would be collected from nearly 6.5 lakh villages in the country, the Kisan Morcha president said.
For this purpose, Subhash Barala had been appointed the coordinator for Haryana, Jagtar Saini for Punjab, former minister Jairam Thakur for Himachal Pradesh, Purushottam Mahajan for Chandigarh, Nirmal Singh for Jammu and Kashmir and former union minister Bachchi Singh Rawat for Uttarakhand, he said, adding that installing the statue is a dream project of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi."
The work on collecting iron pieces would start from October 31, the day of Sardar Patel's birth anniversary, and continue till January 26, Dhankar added.
The Haryana unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will conduct contests such as raagnis and essay writing in schools and colleges on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to spread awareness about his contribution to freedom struggle.
