It's a clever ploy to shield Majithia, says Congress

The Congress on Thursday termed the resignation of cabinet minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur as “a clever attempt to shield revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia” in the drug racket controversy.

“Phillaur was simply made a scapegoat in this drama of his resignation, just to save the real culprit, Majithia,” said Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira in a statement issued here.

“Needless to mention, [arrested druglord] Jagdish Bhola had directly named Bikram Majithia as the kingpin of drug trafficking in Punjab, before a large section of the media in Mohali,” said Khaira, who claims to still be the state Congress spokesman as his resignation, he says, has not been accepted.

He further stated that deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and director general of police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini had given the clean chit to Majithia within hours of Bhola’s statement, “without any appropriate investigation”.

“This clearly brings out the fact that because Majithia is the brother-in-law of Sukhbir Badal, the Punjab police did not have the courage to question or arrest him.”

He also noted that “anguish and resentment against Majithia in the Majha area led to the defeat of BJP stalwart Arun Jaitely” in the Lok Sabha polls against Congress’ Capt Amarinder Singh.

“If CM Parkash Singh Badal is serious about upholding ethics and moral standards in politics, he must also ask his other ministers, including Sikander Singh Maluka and Gulzar Singh Ranike, to resign, as they too faced serious criminal and corruption charges,” said the former MLA.
